The investment package combines passenger upgrades with extensive rail works. It includes seven modern covered platforms with lifts and escalators, a new connecting passage between the existing tunnels, and a dynamic passenger information system. At the same time, it also covers new railway traffic control equipment, plus works to tracks, turnouts and overhead line infrastructure, as reported by Railway Pro.
Scope at Warszawa Wschodnia and Warszawa Stadion
At Warszawa Wschodnia, the station’s existing subways are to be linked by a new pedestrian tunnel beneath Platform 6. The goal is to make it easier to move across the station and provide access to the new Tysiąclecia Street.
At Warszawa Stadion, works include construction of a new platform that will serve passengers until the completion of all works on the cross-city line. A direct link is also planned between the railway stop and the Stadion Narodowy metro station, allowing transfers between train and underground services without passengers having to leave the station building.
Separately, a new pedestrian subway is planned to create a direct link between the Praga Południe and Praga Północ districts. For railway staff, it is intended to improve access to operational buildings and offices. Meanwhile, the project also includes a structural shell beneath the station for a future road tunnel along Tysiąclecia Street, to be delivered by the city authorities.
Traffic control, viaduct and timeline to 2029
The redevelopment is also set to reshape railway traffic management around Warsaw East. A new 1.6 km viaduct with 29 spans will connect the station to Line No. 9, carrying two tracks and enabling improved links towards Gdańsk, Olsztyn and Legionowo.
In addition, a new signalling facility equipped with computer-based control systems is to be delivered. Works will also be carried out on existing railway bridges along three streets.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this year and will continue until 2029. Key elements listed for the overall project, as also covered by Rynek Kolejowy, include:
- over 46 km of reconstructed railway track and 57 km of new overhead line equipment;
- 170 newly installed turnouts;
- seven modernised platforms at Warsaw East station;
- two modernised platforms at Warsaw Stadion and construction of a temporary platform;
- seven rebuilt railway bridges;
- one new 1,600 m-long viaduct;
- 14 lifts serving platforms at Warsaw East;
- two lifts for the metro–Warsaw Stadion link and one lift serving the temporary platform;
- seven pairs of escalators (up and down) at Warsaw East station;
- two pairs of escalators for the metro–Warsaw Stadion link and one pair serving the temporary platform.
