Alstom is implementing a new traction system in China
29.05.2023
Alstom NUG Propulsion System (ANP), the company’s joint venture in China, recently introduced a new traction system on one of its trains
Currently, trial operations are being conducted in the city of Chengdu with passengers. The project is based on earlier tests using the new traction technology in Sweden, as reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply, citing Alstom. The new traction system has been installed on a demonstration train running on Line 7 Chengdu in 2023, Alstom.
The innovation lies in the next-generation traction converter made of silicon carbide (SiC) and the permanent magnet motor (PMM) propulsion system.
The use of SiC as a semiconductor material is expected to enable operation at higher voltages. It can also better withstand a wider range of temperatures and frequency switching.
The advantages of PMM include greater reliability, reduced weight, and smaller dimensions. The technology also boasts high efficiency and power.
