The event featured keynote remarks from Deputy U.S. Transportation Secretary Steven Bradbury and Federal Railroad Administrator David Fink. Also, panel discussions involved industry leaders and other stakeholders. Attendees could view and interact with more than a dozen rail technologies on display.

FRA Rail Tech Summit technologies

The technologies included a portable inspection portal. It uses artificial intelligence to proactively monitor rail-car wear and help identify possible issues. In addition, the summit highlighted the FRA’s automated track inspection program. Through that program, the agency has noted success in working with major railroads. The work is increasing the use of automated inspection technology. The technology is used to identify defects earlier and help prevent accidents. Both examples connected the summit’s technology focus with earlier detection of wear, defects and possible safety problems.

Chuck Baker is president of the American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association. He took part in one of the panel discussions. Also, he discussed joint work by the FRA and short lines to improve safety.

“We explored the crucial link between technology, innovation and safety,” he said in a press release. “When short lines are able to deploy new technology, we are able to increase efficiency, grow volumes and enhance safety at even the smallest of railroads.”

Short line and Class I railroad views

Several Class I railroad executives also commented in the release on the summit and the role of technology.

“[We] appreciate the FRA hosting this important event, bringing together so many voices committed to the future of rail. “We value the opportunity to work closely together as we continue advancing our shared commitment to safety through innovation and cutting-edge technology.” — BNSF Railway Vice President of Safety Chad Sundem

“From advanced inspection tools to smarter operating systems, many of the solutions showcased today are already helping railroads prevent incidents, move goods more efficiently and provide the reliable service customers and communities count on.” — CSX Assistant Vice President Stephen Flippin

“CPKC’s industry-leading train accident safety statistics come from integrating our data analytics and detection technologies into our everyday operations. We will continue to use our technology to gather and analyze data to anticipate and address potential issues before they happen.” — CPKC AVP for Government Affairs Larry Lloyd.
