The Stadler rack train order covers four more units for Switzerland’s Gornergrat Railway. They are Polaris rack-and-pinion multiple units for the mountain line between Zermatt and Gornergrat. The deal extends the operator’s fleet renewal programme. The route is known for views of the Matterhorn.

According to Stadler, the agreement is worth about 30 million Swiss francs (€32.5 million). Delivery is scheduled from autumn 2028. Meanwhile, regular passenger service is planned for winter 2028. The new units will run on the 9.3 km route from Zermatt to Gornergrat. The line has gradients of up to 200‰ and strong tourist demand.

The operator had already ordered five Polaris units in 2019, RailTech reported. One more vehicle followed in 2024. The latest contract adds to a fleet already in service on the line. Also, those trains form the backbone of operations on the route.
“The Gornergrat Railway operates one of the most spectacular and famous railway lines in the world,” said Dennis Laubbacher, CEO of Stadler Bussnang. “We are proud that our trains travel through this unique Alpine landscape every day, offering passengers an unforgettable experience. This repeat order is a strong sign of confidence in our rolling stock and our expertise in the field of rack-and-pinion railways.”
Fleet renewal for high-alpine operations
According to GGB, the additional units will replace older rolling stock as part of a phased modernisation programme. The aim is to improve performance in challenging alpine conditions. At the same time, the Polaris trains are designed for steep-gradient rack operation. Their traction systems are built to handle sharp inclines.
“The POLARIS multiple units are optimally designed for the conditions of the Gornergrat line and, thanks to modern technology and high performance, increase our operational flexibility,” said Ivan Pfammatter, Head of Rolling Stock at Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn.
Passenger features on the Zermatt to Gornergrat line
The trains will feature large panoramic windows. They are aimed at maximising views of the Matterhorn and the surrounding Valais Alps. Also, they will provide low-floor access and full accessibility. Separately, manufacturing will take place at Stadler’s Bussnang facility in the canton of Thurgau.
