Australia covers almost three million square miles, or 7.7 million square kilometers. It is the world’s sixth largest country. That scale has helped shape rail journeys. They appeal to travelers who want natural scenery and red-earth landscapes. They also go beyond the major cities where many trips begin and end.

Long-distance rail travel in Australia takes time. These services are generally positioned as luxury experiences. They are aimed largely at train enthusiasts. They also appeal to travelers who choose style and the journey itself. They are not simply trying to get from one point to another.

Journey Beyond and the new premium train suites

Since 2017, Journey Beyond has operated well-known Australian rail routes. Those routes include The Ghan and The Indian Pacific. Meanwhile, Journey Beyond has now introduced new sleeper suites across three of its train services. The debut came on the Indian Pacific service between Perth and Sydney on Apr. 4.

The Aurora Australis suites feature queen-size beds. In addition, they include a lounge area and an in-room bar with butler service. Their Art Deco-inspired interiors combine timber and stone. Also, they use sheepskin and leather accents designed to reflect the Australian landscape.

These suites sit at the top of the operator’s product range. Guests who book them get access to the trains’ Platinum Club lounge and dining carriage. They also receive private transfers to the platform at both departure and arrival points. In addition, they get journey-specific excursions. For example, the northbound Ghan service includes a helicopter trip over Nitmiluk National Park. The park is in the Northern Territory. On the southbound route, it includes a charter flight to Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park.

Journey Beyond CEO Chris Tallent said in a statement:

“Our iconic trains have long connected guests with some of the country’s most extraordinary landscapes, and these suites elevate that experience to an entirely new level.”

“They offer guests a private sanctuary on board, a place to unwind and fully immerse themselves in the journey across this remarkable continent.”

Aurora Australis suites fares and routes

The rollout began on the Perth-to-Sydney Indian Pacific route. It also extends to the longer Ghan journey and the Great Southern service.

As reported by TheStreet, Aurora Suite fares start at $7,800 USD on the three-day Indian Pacific trip. The Australis Suite starts at $11,700 USD. Also, prices are higher on the longer Ghan journey between Darwin and Adelaide. They are also higher on the Great Southern service between Adelaide and Brisbane.

These rail journeys are aimed primarily at international visitors. They offer a particularly high-end way to experience Australia.

U.S. travel links to Australia

The development comes amid the same growth in Australian tourism from the U.S. market. According to Tourism SA, United Airlines started the route in December 2025. It connects San Francisco International (SFO) and Adelaide Airport (ADL). The 15-hour service goes to the capital of South Australia. It is also where Journey Beyond is headquartered. It is the only direct flight from the U.S. to the city.

Delta has also recently restored its seasonal services from LAX to Brisbane and Melbourne. Separately, American Airlines raised its LAX-Brisbane Airport (BNE) frequencies to three weekly flights for 2026.
