Indian Railways approves 220 kmph trainsets
12.04.2026
Indian Railways 220 kmph trainsets mark the next step beyond the current Vande Bharat benchmark. They also reflect the country’s push for faster passenger operations.

According to India Today, the Railway Board has approved the production of two trainsets. Each has a design speed of 220 kmph. The programme is part of the Coach Production Programme for 2027-28. Execution has been assigned to the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai.
Each of the new trainsets is planned for India’s broad-gauge network. Each one will eventually have 16 coaches. This keeps the design compatible with existing railway infrastructure.
Indian Railways 220 kmph trainsets and the Vande Bharat benchmark
The Vande Bharat Express remains the fastest train in regular operation in India. Its design speed of 180 kmph remains the current benchmark. The new trainsets are meant to move beyond that level. Their design speed is 220 kmph. Their operational potential is up to 200 kmph.

If that level is reached, Indian Railways would move closer to global semi-high-speed rail standards. It would also support faster intercity journeys in the years ahead.
Production plan, BEML contract and project cost
The programme also sits within the Make in India initiative. In October 2024, the Integral Coach Factory awarded BEML a contract for the design and manufacture of two high-speed trainsets. The terms are outlined in a BEML disclosure.
At the initial stage, each train will be built with 8 coaches. The project later calls for expansion to the full 16-coach configuration.
The project’s financial structure reflects its scale. The cost has been set at ₹27.86 crore per coach. The full contract value stands at ₹866.87 crore. That amount includes development work, tooling and testing infrastructure.
Officials say the investment is intended to deliver faster trains. It is also meant to build long-term domestic capability. That would support future high-speed rail projects in India.
Passenger features and broader high-speed ambition
Passenger comfort is expected to remain central to the new trainsets. Planned features include:
- steel-bodied coaches for higher durability
- a fully air-conditioned chair car layout
- reclining ergonomic seats
- advanced onboard passenger information systems
The stated aim is to pair higher speeds with smoother travel. It also aims for better comfort and improved safety systems.
Most trains in India currently run at speeds of up to 160 kmph. Real operating speeds are often lower because of track limitations. Regular passenger services above 200 kmph do not currently exist in the country.
Indian Railways is gradually building the base for faster intercity services. That effort includes these trainsets and related infrastructure upgrades. In addition, 220 kmph-capable trainsets would move operations beyond the current Vande Bharat standard. They would point to quicker, smoother and more modern long-distance rail travel in India.
