24.04.2026
NJ TRANSIT fleet renewal is moving ahead for rail, bus and paratransit vehicles. The agency is also planning for additional 2026 FIFA World Cup travel demand. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

NJ TRANSIT fleet renewal covers rail and road vehicles
At a ceremony in Kearny, state and federal officials joined transport representatives. They marked the arrival of the first Multilevel III rail carriage. The carriage is part of a 374-car order intended to replace ageing vehicles. The order is also intended to add rail network capacity, as Railway Supply previously reported.
According to NJ TRANSIT, testing is expected to take several months before passenger service. NJ TRANSIT said as many as 40 units may enter service later this year. The new carriages are designed to operate longer between mechanical problems. They also offer higher speeds, more seats and improved accessibility. They can run as single-powered cars or in longer train formations.

In addition, the agency is rolling out updated Access Link paratransit vehicles. The changes are intended to shorten boarding times. They are also intended to improve access for passengers with mobility needs.

River LINE overhaul and World Cup travel planning
Separately, the agency introduced the first refurbished River LINE light rail vehicle earlier in 2026. In total, 14 River LINE light rail vehicles are scheduled for overhaul. The work is part of continuing maintenance and service improvement efforts.
Meanwhile, NJ TRANSIT is preparing for higher passenger volumes during the 2026 FIFA tournament. MetLife Stadium is set to host eight matches. Each fixture is expected to draw more than 78,000 spectators.
In addition, NJ TRANSIT has developed a regional mobility plan. The plan focuses on maintaining regular services for daily commuters. Also, the plan gives visitors additional travel guidance and information. NJ TRANSIT has also created an online resource for match-day travel arrangements and expected conditions.
