Mumbai’s skyline has picked up a new visual marker on Metro Line 2B after the final pylon element was erected, a step also noted by MMRDA. With that last element in place, the Shunya Bridge now forms a clear “0”—a symbolic reference to Aryabhata and the idea of shunya, or zero.

Engineering feat behind the ZERO shape

At its core, the structure is a 130-metre-long cable-stayed bridge with an 80-metre main span across Vakola Nalla and a 40-metre-high steel pylon. The approach blends heritage-inspired design with modern construction methods, backed by detailed planning and precision work.

The steel pylon weighs 750 metric tonnes and was fabricated and assembled from 10 prefabricated elements. The build included about 5.9 kilometres of on-site welding across multiple welding positions, a process that required careful coordination and accuracy.

To complete the ZERO-shaped pylon, the final crown element was lifted using 750-MT and 350-MT heavy-duty cranes equipped with super-lift systems. That installation capped months of engineering work and marked a landmark moment for the Metro Line 2B programme.

Metro Line 2B – strengthening east–west connectivity

The Shunya Bridge is a key part of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, which runs from D.N. Nagar to Mandale. The fully elevated corridor spans 23.643 kilometres and includes 20 stations, linking the eastern and western suburbs and improving cross-city movement—an ongoing programme also covered by Railway Supply.

Metro Line 2B is designed to integrate with major transport corridors and networks, including the Western and Eastern Express Highways, the Western and Central Railways, the Monorail, and multiple metro lines such as Line 1, Line 2A, Line 3, and Line 4. The aim is to support smoother transfers across Mumbai.

Key project features and interchange stations

Project details include a 23.643 km fully elevated alignment, 20 elevated stations, and a Yellow line identity. The Mandale depot spans 31.4 hectares and is under construction. Depending on road conditions, the line is expected to deliver a 50% to 75% travel time reduction.

Strategic interchange stations at D.N. Nagar, Bandra, Kurla East, Chembur, Mankhurd, and ITO Junction are intended to improve interconnectivity and help bridge key transit gaps. With rail-based access planned for major commercial hubs, government offices, and prominent geographical landmarks, the corridor is positioned to ease daily commuting.

Blending mathematics-inspired design with advanced engineering, the Shunya Bridge reflects India’s scientific heritage alongside Mumbai’s infrastructure ambitions. By strengthening Metro Line 2B’s role in urban mobility, it supports a faster, more connected city shaped by reduced travel time and improved suburban links.
