MTA expands infrastructure protection efforts

The MTA implemented an extensive overhaul, which emphasized flood prevention measures and sustainable solutions. Leaks in the system had to be repaired, and the drainage infrastructure cleaned and examined for the impending storm.

Because of such improvements, major stations and tunnels are less at risk from floods and can recover quickly after a storm. Also, through new monitoring programs, the agency measures the level of progress achieved and the problem areas emerging.

Leaders at the MTA emphasized the importance of coordination between the organization and the Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Protection. In doing so, they plan to build a more resilient environment for the transit sector within cities.

MTA integrates resilience into long-term planning

Sustainability takes a prominent place on the roadmap as an imperative of operation, rather than a preference. Sustainability metrics are integral to the modernization process for every project delineated by the MTA.

In the recent update, engineers have identified ten high-priority locations in New York where immediate flood mitigation projects are required to secure the neighborhoods and transportation routes around these sites. Such projects at these locations are a demonstration of the benefits of resilience for the community.

In fact, the plan also takes into consideration the savings from the storm after the damage from Hurricane Sandy, which revealed weaknesses at the level of the tunnels and substations.
