Modernization of TGM4 is a project that has proven itself many times!

The locomotive of the TGM-4 series is well known to the owners of the rolling stock fleet. And, just like TEM-2, it belongs to the category of “working” locomotives that have reached the point of physical wear and tear. Neither the technological, nor the functional, nor the aesthetic aspects of old locomotives of this type do not meet the requirements of the modern consumer. That is why in 2018 LTG Tech offered the market a TGM-4 modernization project.

It is worth noting that the first customer for the modernization of TGM-4 was exactly an enterprise from Ukraine. The project received the EUR1 certificate and was awarded the gold medal “Product of the Year 2018” by the Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists. Later, the TGM-4 modernization project was repeatedly carried out for customers from Ukraine and Lithuania.

So what’s changing?

When modernizing a four-axle diesel locomotive of the TGM4 series:

  • fault detection and inspection of the main frame and bogie frames for suitability of further exploitation
  • corresponding repairs, the service life is extended to 12 years.
  • all components and assemblies that do not change for new ones are overhauled.
  • after repair, processing and preparation of the main frame of the locomotive, a new diesel internal combustion engine CATERPILLAR CAT3512 or C27 is installed on it.
  • for operation during the cold season, the locomotive is equipped with an autonomous WEBASTO engine preheating system


  • complete disassembly, washing, checking the geometry of the main frame and trolley frames, restoration of dimensions
  • repair of brake equipment and revision of brake cylinders, repair of pipelines and body stops;
  • full inspection of wheelsets

Brake system and compressor:

  • a new compressor of the VU-3.5 / 10-1450 type is installed. Piston type compressor with a capacity of 210 m³ / hour. The drive is carried out by a diesel engine using a clutch;
  • the brake system is being overhauled.

Cooling system:

  • cooling sections are replaced with new ones;
  • the collectors of the cooling sections (located in the refrigerating chamber) are repaired with subsequent modification;
  • complete replacement of pipelines and their connections, new rubber expansion joints are installed.

Electrical equipment:

  • complete replacement of electrical wiring and cables
  • wiring and electrical equipment of the locomotives are adapted to work with the new power plant;
  • a new alkaline rechargeable battery, type 2TN450, is installed.

Driver’s cab:

  • noise-absorbing and thermal insulation materials, windows are installed in the driver’s cab;
  • a modified driver’s console, a new heater and air conditioner are installed comfortable driver’s chair certified for use in railway transport.

The technical and economic effect as a result of the modernization of TGM-4 is as follows:

  • The characteristics of the modernized locomotive fully comply with modern technical, power, economic, and environmental requirements; engine emission class CT27, CT32 – Euro 4 + / 5.
  • The reliability of the operation of the locomotive, power plant and auxiliary equipment is increased.
  • The trouble-free operation of the engine is guaranteed for 10-15 years before the first overhaul.
  • The service life of the locomotive is increased to 12 years.
  • Reduced ongoing maintenance and repair costs;
  • Fuel consumption is reduced by up to 25% of oil consumption – up to 60-70%;
  • The control and information support of the operation, maintenance and repair of the locomotive is improved due to the installation of a new microprocessor control and diagnostic system.
  • The working conditions of the locomotive crews are significantly improved, and the option of the possibility of controlling the locomotive by one person is also being implemented.
  • Thus, it becomes possible to get a capitally repaired locomotive with installed modern equipment and a new economical diesel engine for only 70% of the cost of a new diesel locomotive.

The locomotive modernization project is being carried out entirely by LTG Tech for 3 months.

LTG Tech is the new name of one of the largest locomotive repair depots – VLRD (Vilnius locomotive repair depot). As a result of joining LTG Cargo (a group of Lithuanian Railways), VLRD (now LTG Tech) continues to implement ambitious rolling stock modernization projects!

LTG Tech carries out:

  • Modernization of the locomotives of TEM2, TGM4, 2M62, M62, CME3M series.
  • Repair of wheelsets of all types;
  • Axle ultrasound examination.
  • Overhaul and revision repairs of electric traction motors and generators ED118, TE006 TD802, GP300, GP312;
  • Maintenance and overhaul of PD1M, 1PD4A, 6CN21/21, D49, K6S310DR engines;
  • Repair of fuel equipment, compressors and gearboxes;
  • Checking and repairing speed meters, pressure gauges and electrical appliances;
  • Design, manufacture, processing and welding of metal structures;
  • Sale of spare parts for locomotives M62, TEM2, CME3.
