CN’s Hybrid Locomotive Pilot Triples in Size
18.08.2026
CANADA: The CN hybrid locomotive programme now includes three units under testing, while two more yard locomotives are scheduled for conversion by the end of 2026.

CN says the upgraded design combines a larger 2.8 MWh battery system using solid-state technology with an 800 HP Tier 4 engine, according to a CN press release. “By repowering and enhancing existing yard locomotives, we are being more efficient while supporting service to our customers and more sustainable operations for the long term,” said Patrick Whitehead, CN’s executive vice-president and chief operating officer.

How the CN hybrid locomotives differ from the pilot
CN says the upgraded design combines a larger 2.8 MWh battery system using solid-state technology with an 800 HP Tier 4 engine. Total output increases from 3,200 to 3,800 HP, while AC traction motors are fitted into a DC motor frame without changing the existing truck interface. CN reported an improvement of up to 50% in fuel efficiency during the initial pilot, together with fewer conventional engine-related failures and less idling. Testing took place in both hot and extreme cold conditions.
CN hybrid locomotive programme could reach five units
If the two additional conversions are completed by the end of 2026, the programme will include five hybrid-electric locomotives. CN has not said whether all five will be in active testing or service by that date. The next important evidence will be fuel-efficiency, reliability and availability data from the current three-locomotive testing phase.
