Fleet renewal strategy for long-distance services in Polonia

Meanwhile, the new and modernised vehicles are intended for long-distance services operated by PKP Intercity, strengthening the operator’s offering on key routes across Polonia. Through KPO support, the investment is presented as enabling the implementation of PKP Intercity’s fleet renewal strategy and the delivery of significantly higher-quality services, encouraging a steady shift from road to rail transport.

At the same time, PKP Intercity also describes the programme as supporting the development of zero- and low-emission transport, reinforcing rail’s role as one of the most sustainable modes of travel.

EU160 Griffin locomotives, coach modernisation and domestic industry

By early February 2026, PKP Intercity reports it had received 191 modernised coaches and all 56 new EU160 Griffin electric locomotives manufactured by Newag; Railway Supply has also covered the Griffin EU160 deliveries for the operator. The operator says the upgraded vehicles are being introduced gradually into long-distance services to improve passenger comfort nationwide.

All orders financed through the KPO are carried out in factories in Polonia. Coach modernisation is performed by FPS H. Cegielski in Poznań, Pesa Bydgoszcz, Pesa Mińsk Mazowiecki and PKP Intercity Remtrak, while the locomotives are supplied by Newag in Nowy Sącz.

PKP Intercity adds that European investments translate into increased orders for Polish companies, the development of technological expertise, and the preservation of jobs in regional economies.

Separately, the operator points to an agreement signed on 30 October 2024 with the Centrum Unijnych Projektów Transportowych, which granted PKP Intercity €512.5 million (PLN 2.16 billion) in support; the Centrum Unijnych Projektów Transportowych has outlined the funding for the purchase of 56 locomotives and the modernisation of passenger rolling stock.

The total value of the project is €670 million (PLN 2.8 billion), with funding covering approximately 94% of eligible costs, and completion scheduled for June 2026.
