Built at Siemens Mobility’s Sacramento facility in California, the trainset will undergo testing in Pueblo before entering passenger service. According to Amtrak’s official update, revenue service on the Northeast Corridor is planned for 2027.

The unit is part of Amtrak’s wider order with Siemens Mobility. The operator has commissioned 83 Airo trainsets in total, with the fleet expected to be used across 14 routes as deliveries and testing move forward.

Production is taking place at two Siemens sites in the United States. One is in Sacramento, California, while the other is in Lexington, North Carolina.

This Northeast Regional trainset is not the only Airo unit now being prepared for service. As Railway Supply previously covered, the move from Sacramento to Pueblo represents another stage before planned 2027 Northeast Corridor service.

In mid-May, the first Airo trainset arrived in Seattle for route testing and practice runs before its expected introduction on the Amtrak Cascades route this year.

Amtrak says the Airo fleet will offer improved passenger amenities, including cafe cars and more spacious interiors. The trainsets are also designed to run at speeds of up to 125 mph on selected routes.
