USA: Pennsylvania officials say a second daily Pennsylvanian train is scheduled to begin in mid-November, raising service between Pittsburgh and New York from one to two trains each direction.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania announced the timing on August 24. Earlier reporting had placed the additional service only in later 2026, so the August 24 announcement supplies a more precise window for an expansion that was already known.

What the extra train would change for passengers

Amtrak, the national intercity passenger rail operator in the United States, currently runs the Pennsylvanian once a day in each direction between Pittsburgh and New York City, crossing Pennsylvania through Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

The planned addition is one more round trip — a train in each direction — on that same route. It is not a new railway line and not a new destination; it is a second daily departure for the communities the route already serves. Track improvements west of Harrisburg, on a section owned by the freight railroad Norfolk Southern, support the added service.

When tickets are expected to go on sale

Amtrak anticipates opening ticket sales for the additional train in October, Pennsylvania officials said. That is an expectation rather than a confirmed on-sale date, and the train cannot be booked now.

The August 24 announcement did not give the exact first day of service or the new departure times, so passengers cannot yet plan around specific trains.

Passengers who want the extra departure should watch Amtrak’s booking system from October, when the additional train, with its confirmed dates and times, is expected to appear alongside the existing service.
