Northeast Regional Airo trainset signals a fleet shift
01.06.2026
Northeast Regional Airo trainset has left Siemens’ Sacramento facility, adding another step to Amtrak’s Airo programme. The train is scheduled to begin operation in 2027, with its design focused on improving the onboard passenger experience.

Northeast Regional Airo trainset moves into testing
The unit is now on its way to Pueblo, Colorado, for testing. According to Amtrak’s official update, the departure marks a formal milestone for the trainset after years of planning, design and manufacturing.
Inside, the train includes modern interiors and improved accessibility. It is also equipped with Auxiliary Power Vehicles fitted with pantographs, allowing it to draw power from overhead electrified lines. On non-electrified route sections, the same train can operate using diesel propulsion.
Airo trainset design focuses on passengers
The new Amtrak Airo trainset is finished in a red, white and blue livery. Its onboard layout is being prepared for Northeast Regional service and includes a mix of standard seating, Coach and Business class accommodation.
When the new fleet of vehicles is fully realised, each trainset will be formed of eight passenger cars. Capacity is expected to be around 300 passengers per set, while Railway Supply previously covered the planned use of Amtrak Airo trains on Northeast Regional services in 2027.
