This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Traction and control systems for 40 trains

The order covers 40 metro trains, each arranged as a six-car set. The fleet is planned for two corridors: Mumbai Metro Line 5 (Orange Line) from Thane to Kalyan via Bhiwandi, and Mumbai Metro Line 6 (Pink Line) between Swami Samarth Nagar and Vikhroli, as reported by Railway Gazette International. The two corridors are described as important for strengthening urban connectivity and reducing travel times in the Mumbai metropolitan area.

ABB’s package combines traction converters, auxiliary converters, traction motors and TCMS software. Line 6 is set to receive 18 trains, while Line 5 will be served by 22 trains.

India-based manufacturing and local support

Manufacturing for the order will take place in India. ABB will build the converters in Bengaluru (Bangalore) and produce the motors in Vadodara, supported by local engineering, testing and maintenance teams.

ABB says the contract marks its entry into the 25 kV AC metro segment in India. The company also describes the project as another step in its strategic partnership with Titagarh Rail Systems, launched in 2023 and previously discussed by Railway Supply.

Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat collaboration

The order also includes industrial collaboration and a gradual move toward co-production of traction components. ABB links this approach to the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiatives.

With this Mumbai Metro contract, ABB says it is strengthening its position in the Indian metro market by supporting energy-efficient, low-emission urban transport systems designed to meet growing mobility demand in India’s major cities.
