The Ohio grade crossing upgrade projects approved by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) on Jan. 22 include more than $1 million in federal funding for three safety improvements in three counties, as reported by Progressive Railroading.

PUCO says the package provides federal funding for grade crossing upgrades that will bring flashing lights and gates installation to three sites. Each project comes with its own completion date and a set federal allocation, as outlined in a PUCO news release.

One of the Ohio railroad grade crossing safety projects involves Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway. The operator will install flashing lights and gates at the State Route 151 and Boyce Drive crossing in Harrison County by Jan. 21, 2027. PUCO officials said $329,788 in federal funds will cover the cost of that work.

In Ravenna, Akron Barberton Cluster Railway is scheduled to add flashing lights and gates at the North Chestnut Street crossing by Oct. 21, 2026. The federal contribution totals $451,081 and is intended to cover project costs.
Ashland Railway will handle the third upgrade, installing flashing lights and gates at the East 9th Street crossing in Ashland County. PUCO said $310,265 in federal funds will cover all project costs, with completion also due by Oct. 21, 2026.
