UTA Plans S-Line Extension Service for Fall 2027

USA: Utah Transit Authority is proposing passenger service on the S-Line extension in 2027 as construction advances on a quarter-mile addition to Salt Lake City’s Sugar House streetcar corridor.

The proposal is part of UTA’s package of service and fare changes now open for public comment. The supplied announcement also includes a proposed base-fare increase from $2.50 to $3 and the addition of contactless credit and debit cards to existing tap-to-pay options.

One New Station Will Extend the S-Line to Highland Drive

UTA’s S-Line Extension Project will carry the streetcar approximately one quarter-mile east from Fairmont Station to Highland Drive near Simpson Avenue. The project includes a new station near Highland Drive and Simpson Avenue, new traffic signals and pedestrian crossing improvements, and additional track infrastructure.

UTA says the extension is intended to improve transit access to the Sugar House business district and surrounding destinations. The existing S-Line is continuing to operate while construction is underway, although riders may experience brief interruptions for project upgrades.

Current construction activity includes utility relocations, site preparation, roadway improvements and infrastructure work needed for future track and station construction.

Construction Is Expected to Continue Through 2027

UTA’s current project information says construction is anticipated to continue through 2027, with service expected after the project is completed and tested. An April 2026 project fact sheet gives a more specific schedule: construction from spring 2026 through summer 2027 and service beginning in fall 2027.

The proposed 2027 service is not yet a final service decision. UTA is collecting public feedback on the wider package of changes, with a virtual public meeting scheduled for August 26 and comments accepted through September 9.

The same proposal would raise the base fare from $2.50 to $3 to offset increased costs. UTA officials said that would be the first base-fare increase since 2013.
