South Wales Relief Line Upgrade has moved six south Wales stations significantly closer to reality. Also, plans for the essential infrastructure needed to enable them were submitted for approval. The work is expected to make those stations “a reality”.

South Wales Relief Line Upgrade between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel Junction

This month, Network Rail Wales and Borders submitted a full business case. Also, Network Rail said the scheme covers track enhancements and improved rail access. Meanwhile, it would also raise line speeds to up to 100mph.

The proposals are now with the UK Government Department for Transport. At the same time, trains on the relief lines would run faster. The relief lines run between Cardiff Central and Severn Tunnel Junction.

The lines are currently used mainly by freight services. In addition, passenger services could also use the relief lines with no extra journey time. Still, freight trains would be able to operate at higher speeds.

Six new railway stations in south Wales

Separately, the work is essential. It would facilitate up to six new stations in south Wales:

  • Cardiff East
  • Newport West
  • Somerton
  • Llanwern
  • Magor and Undy
  • Cardiff Parkway

These stations would strengthen local connectivity. Also, they would give more communities access to rail travel.

Nick Millington, route director for Network Rail Wales and Borders, stated: “By increasing the speed and capability of the relief lines between Cardiff and Severn Tunnel Junction, we can create the capacity needed to support new passenger services and unlock the proposed new stations along this route.”

Vernon Everitt, Chair of Transport for Wales, called the development a “major step” toward introducing new stations in south east Wales.

He said the upgrades would make the proposed stations possible. In addition, he said higher line speeds would increase capacity.

Transport for Wales and wider Welsh rail plans

The scheme forms part of a broader investment programme in Welsh railways. Meanwhile, it follows the UK Government’s recent commitment to advance rail improvements in the region.

In February, Prime Minister Keir Starmer backed a list of desired projects. It was set out in a new vision document from Transport for Wales. For example, the list included funding for the six new stations. Those stations are between Cardiff and the Severn Tunnel. It also included a new station at Deeside. That station would improve services between north Wales and Merseyside.
