Railway 200 rail celebration sets a record worldwide
27.01.2026
Railway 200 rail celebration has officially become the biggest rail celebration ever staged, engaging tens of millions of people across 180 countries, as Rail Technology Magazine reports.

This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The modern railway bicentenary celebration has already inspired more than 10,000 activities and events, drawing hundreds of thousands of families and enthusiasts.
World’s largest rail festival begins with the “Whistle-Up”
The campaign got underway on New Year’s Day with a global “Whistle-Up” of 200 locomotives, described as the largest heritage rail mass participation event ever recorded; the same core milestones are also outlined on the official Railway 200 campaign website. Momentum has since continued to build. Alstom’s Derby festival attracted 42,000 visitors, while a further 100,000 travelled to Shildon in the North East — the “cradle of the railways” — for the S&DR200 festival.

Railway 200 rail celebration puts the focus on the future
The bicentenary looks back on 200 years of history, but organisers have framed the programme around what comes next for the industry. So far, the initiative has encouraged 100,000 young people to consider careers within the sector. Alongside that, it launched the “Inspiration” Train, a dedicated exhibition train touring Britain until the end of June — a strand also covered by Railway Supply. The train has already welcomed 60,000 visitors and earned a 9/10 recommendation rating.
Online, the Railway 200 website now hosts the industry’s largest online educational resource, exceeding 1.7 million page views and supporting the wider modern railway bicentenary celebration.
Awards, commemorations, and the next milestones
Railway 200’s impact was reinforced when it received VisitEngland’s Outstanding Contribution to Tourism award. The campaign has also been marked with commemorative coins from The Royal Mint, a Royal Mail stamp collection, and a specially commissioned poem by the Poet Laureate.
Emma Roberts, Railway 200’s Programme Manager, said the bicentenary was “an unqualified success,” crediting the many people and organisations who took part. She said it brought the rail industry together, encouraged people to re-evaluate rail’s role, and showcased the railway as a varied and rewarding career open to all, while rebuilding goodwill and restoring pride in a British invention that changed the world. Roberts added that the campaign’s legacy is being evaluated for the industry to build upon, including new progressive partnerships, new public artworks, new career pathways, and stronger links between mainline and heritage railways. She also said Railway 200 has set the standard for other countries’ national rail celebrations in the years ahead.
Although the main celebratory year has concluded, the “Inspiration” Train will remain on the tracks for five more months. A full public summary and impact report of the campaign is scheduled for publication in March, following final feedback from the project’s global partners.
