Still, it also expands the existing agreement with consultant JHP.
JHP is a partnership of Jacobs and HNTB.
Separately, it will pay for related staff support services.
Also, it will pay for station condition surveying.
Planning is expected to take about a year.
In addition, it is set to start in the second quarter.
Why new PATH fare gates are needed?
PATH’s existing fare gates are more than 20 years old.
PANYNJ Executive Director Kathryn Garcia said that in the release.
Also, she said the new equipment will help the authority address fare evasion.
In addition, it will better accommodate riders.
At the same time, it will integrate tap-to-pay technology.
PATH operates 341 fare gates across its 13 stations.
They include standard and Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant gates.
Meanwhile, PANYNJ officials said the aging fare gates and related infrastructure frequently break down.
Still, they said rising fare evasion has led to lost revenue for PATH.
It has grown in recent years.
Separately, PATH is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
It provides passenger-rail service from New York City to neighboring communities in New Jersey.
