Passenger coach procurement in Slovenia: SŽ contracts
18.12.2025
Passenger coach procurement in Slovenia is linked to plans to develop high-speed passenger services and make rail travel more attractive.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

On the Slovenske Železnice website, it is stated that operator SŽ Potniški Promet signed two contracts on 15 December 2025 worth a total of €97.7 million, within a long-term strategy for developing the national railways.
A key element of the package is the agreement with Hungarian investment company Magyar Vagon. Under a €71.8 million contract, it will supply 20 IC+ passenger coaches. The coaches are intended for domestic and international services at speeds of up to 200 km/h, with delivery planned for October 2028.

Five of the IC+ coaches will be multi-purpose, with spaces for three passengers with reduced mobility, an area for 12 bicycles, and a bistro zone. The full batch will be adapted for passengers with visual impairments and equipped with Wi-Fi, passenger information systems, and individual USB sockets.
A passenger counting system is also included, showing in real time the occupancy of seating, bicycle spaces, and wheelchair spaces. This functionality is intended to improve convenience on both domestic routes and international services.
The second part of the programme focuses on traction. A €25.9 million contract with Siemens Mobility provides for the delivery of four multi-system Vectron electric locomotives in April–May 2027; as reported by Railway Gazette International, the locomotives are designed for speeds of up to 200 km/h and operation on 3 kV DC, as well as 25 kV 50 Hz AC and 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC.
The Vectron locomotives will be fitted with the European Train Control System (ETCS) and certified for operation in Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia, the Czech Republic and Italy (on the 29 km section to Trieste). Slovenian media also covered the contracts, including N1 Slovenija.
Earlier, in March 2025, Slovenian freight operator SŽ Tovorni promet signed a €150 million contract with Alstom for the supply of 30 multi-system Traxx Universal electric locomotives.
