Norfolk Southern America250 locomotives have been unveiled as a six-unit patriotic series for America250, the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States on July 4, 2026. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The announcement comes a little more than a month before the anniversary. It also stands as one of the more extensive America250 locomotive announcements reported so far.

Six patriotic locomotive paint schemes

Earlier RT&S commentary had pointed to the likely absence of a modern 2026 version of the American Freedom Train as a disappointment. The 1975-76 American Freedom Train became a notable part of the U.S. Bicentennial celebration.

There was also an earlier train under the same name. It toured the country from 1947 to 1949, two years after World War II ended, with the purpose of reminding Americans of the nation’s founding principles.

The subject falls somewhat outside the usual RT&S focus. Still, it was highlighted in November because the author considered it important to acknowledge. Since then, it has been announced that there will be no 2026 edition of the American Freedom Train.

In December, RT&S also raised the idea that Class One railroads could mark the anniversary by applying patriotic paint schemes to modern locomotives. That is now happening, although the rollout has been slower than RT&S would like to see.

Norfolk Southern America250 locomotives join other liveries

The first America250 locomotive schemes covered by RT&S came from CPKC and CN in early March. BNSF followed last week with its own America250 liveries. Norfolk Southern has now joined that group with a six-unit commemorative series.

The Norfolk Southern program includes three EMD/Progress Rail locomotives and three Wabtec/General Electric locomotives. Each unit will carry a different patriotic design. Norfolk Southern also presented the series as part of its America’s 250 locomotive program.

Juniata teams to work on the commemorative series

John Orr, Norfolk Southern Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, said the locomotives are meant to represent more than national symbols and historic milestones. He linked the Norfolk Southern commemorative series to the employees and the work behind it.

Orr said railroaders across Norfolk Southern, especially the skilled teams at Juniata, will bring the project to life with pride, craftsmanship, and responsibility. He also said the company is proud to recognize a historic moment for the country through the commemorative series.

Tim Lasure, a carman at the Juniata Locomotive Shop, also spoke about what the work means. He said the shop takes pride in every engine it handles, and these units are no different.

At the same time, he noted that the America250 patriotic locomotive paint schemes carry added meaning because they will represent the anniversary, Norfolk Southern, and the daily work of the railroad’s employees. As previously covered by Railway Supply, Norfolk Southern is among the rail companies marking America 250 through specially designed rail equipment. According to Lasure, the crews involved will know they completed the job properly and together when the locomotives roll out.
