NJ Transit officials said the plan was developed under an executive order. The March 24 executive order was issued by New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill. The order called for stronger reliability. Also, it called for a better overall travel experience across the agency’s services.

What the NJ Transit rapid action plan includes?

The plan covers four main improvement areas: digital experience, cleanliness, accessibility and public safety. Also, the work covers customer-facing information systems and conditions at stations, facilities and vehicles.

For example, NJ Transit said it will accelerate a mobile app redesign. The work includes the development of a new customer service information system. In addition, it will accelerate investments in real-time visibility technology. The agency’s digital displays and website will also be updated.

Meanwhile, public safety measures include establishing a Real Time Crime Center. They also include expanding and upgrading camera systems at stations and facilities. In addition, the plan calls for more lighting. At the same time, accessibility work focuses on elevator and escalator reliability. It also covers signage, wayfinding and navigation support for visually impaired customers.

Separately, NJ Transit plans to use a station care team model to address station cleanliness. It will also create a station condition and improvement plan for facilities and vehicles.

Existing budget will cover the improvement projects

“The Rapid Action Plan establishes a clear, actionable roadmap to improve customer experience across [our] network,” said agency officials. “NJ Transit has begun implementation of the initiatives outlined in the plan, prioritizing actions that can quickly improve the day-to-day travel experience for customers.”

The agency said no additional funding will go toward the plan. The improvement projects will be covered under NJ Transit’s existing budget.
