Newag hybrid multiple unit for PKP Intercity presented in Nowy Sącz
26.02.2026
Newag hybrid multiple unit for PKP Intercity has been presented at the manufacturer’s plant in Nowy Sącz, Poland. The visit included Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak and representatives of the boards of PKP Intercity and Newag, as outlined by Poland’s Ministry of Infrastructure.

Dual-traction hybrid trains and performance targets
The new dual-traction hybrid trains bring together electric and diesel propulsion, so they can work across both electrified and non-electrified lines. For passengers, this is expected to shorten travel times on routes where a locomotive swap was previously needed.

Also, the vehicles are designed for speeds of up to 160 km/h on electrified lines and up to 120 km/h on non-electrified lines.
Stage V engines, ETCS and planned future upgrades
Newag says the trainsets use four combustion engines compliant with the Stage V emissions standard, backed by a dedicated power supply system. In addition, the design target is a range of up to 920 km on a single tank of fuel.
At the same time, the manufacturer has prepared a configuration for PKP Intercity that allows the installation of an alternative, emission-free energy source. Still, onboard systems are intended to support a high level of operational safety, including ETCS.
Passenger capacity, onboard amenities and service rollout
Meanwhile, each unit will offer 179 seats in total, including 156 in second class, 21 in first class, and two spaces dedicated to people with disabilities. Planned amenities include air conditioning, ergonomic seats, electrical outlets, USB-A and USB-C ports at the seats, and individual lighting.
The layout includes an area for families with children, with tables featuring game boards and storage space. There will also be spaces for transporting bicycles without having to lift them, a dining area, vending machines, a quiet area available in both classes, and a separate compartment for the control team.
Separately, PKP Intercity says introducing new hybrid multiple units will expand access to long-distance rail transport in many regions of Poland over the coming years. For around 70 localities, the number of rail connections is expected to at least double, with improved services affecting about 3.5 million inhabitants. The trains are also intended to support the return of long-distance services to 14 localities, including some that have been without such trains for up to 40 years.
The first Newag hybrid multiple unit for PKP Intercity is scheduled for delivery in 2027. It is part of a contract worth PLN 3.36 billion (EUR 798 million) for 35 hybrid multiple units, with deliveries planned by the second quarter of 2029, as reported by Railway Supply and Railway Pro.
