Rail STM Dragon 2 Derails While Hauling 14 Wagons in Poland

A Rail STM Dragon 2 locomotive derailed during a shunting move at Zagnańsk station in Poland on 22 July 2026 while hauling 14 wagons loaded with aggregate.

Emergency crews secure the Zagnańsk derailment
The initial industry report, based on information from the Zagnańsk-Chrusty volunteer fire brigade, said firefighters were sent to secure the site. Personnel from JRG 2 Kielce, the police and the Railway Protection Guard also attended before responsibility passed to the relevant railway services.
Wirtualna Polska, citing the Kielce fire service, reported that the call was received at about 18:40. Two crews from the State Fire Service and volunteer fire service were dispatched. Firefighters said part of the locomotive’s wheels left the rails during shunting while it was hauling 14 wagons loaded with aggregate.
No one was injured, according to the fire service. The first reports did not disclose the extent of damage to the locomotive or track.

Single-track running and a two-crane recovery
A PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe spokesperson later said the shunting move had started from a siding at Zagnańsk station. At the time of that update, trains were using one track under a changed operating arrangement, preventing train crossings at the station and producing average delays of about 15 minutes.
PKP PLK planned to rerail the locomotive on Monday using two road cranes. The infrastructure manager said the operation required preparation to protect the overhead equipment while the heavy machinery worked. No confirmed cause was stated in the official comments quoted for the traffic and recovery update.
Dragon 2 technical context
Newag describes the Dragon 2 as a six-axle Co’Co’ electric locomotive developed for heavy freight work. The manufacturer lists a service mass of 119 tonnes, a maximum speed of 120 km/h and capacity to haul freight trains weighing up to 3,200 tonnes.
The locomotive involved had been delivered to Rail STM about a year before the derailment. Publicly available reports had not established its damage level or a return-to-service timetable.
