First Dragon 2 locomotive starts OnTrain deliveries

The handover took place at NEWAG’s plant in Nowy Sącz, where the locomotive appeared in a dedicated turquoise-and-black exterior created and applied by UniGraf. Railmarket reported that the unit is the first of ten Dragon 2 locomotives ordered for OnTrain’s fleet.

The delivery marks another step in OnTrain’s expansion as a locomotive leasing platform for freight operators in Central and Eastern Europe. Infrastructure investor Marguerite says the company has firm orders for 40 Alstom Traxx 3 multisystem locomotives and ten NEWAG Dragon 2 last-mile heavy locomotives, while additional contracted vehicles remain options.

OnTrain has positioned its business around supplying modern electric locomotives as an alternative to ageing rolling stock. The company offers leasing and accompanying services, allowing freight operators to add traction capacity without purchasing locomotives outright.

First Dragon 2 locomotive brings last-mile capability

OnTrain’s fleet page lists its Dragon 2 version as the E6ACTadnb, a six-axle Co’Co’ electric freight locomotive approved for operation in Poland. It has a maximum speed of 120 km/h, 5 MW of electric power and maximum starting tractive effort of 410 kN.

The locomotive operates under Poland’s 3 kV DC electrification system and includes a 503 kW Cummins Stage V last-mile engine. That auxiliary power unit enables movements on non-electrified sidings, terminals and short industrial sections without requiring a separate shunting locomotive.

The technical package also includes ETCS Baseline 3 Release 2, GPS, an energy meter and external and internal camera systems. NEWAG describes Dragon 2 as a platform developed for heavy freight trains, combining high locomotive mass, individual axle drive and an anti-slip system to improve adhesion.

With the first unit handed over, OnTrain and NEWAG are moving from production into the delivery stage for the ten-locomotive order. The checked sources do not identify the remaining delivery timetable or the first commercial operator for the locomotive.
