MEXICO: Metro operator Metrorrey hopes to begin restricted operation in time for Monterrey’s World Cup matches, as reported by Railway Gazette International. The plan covers sections of monorail lines 4 and 6. Full passenger service is now not expected before 2027. Still, no firm opening date has been set. The current timing separates a possible limited World Cup launch from the later start of full passenger operation.

Monterrey monorail construction and service timing

The Nuevo León state government had planned to put large sections of both routes into service before the city’s World Cup fixtures. Earlier this year, though, it said construction progress on the two lines had reached around 78%.

In September 2022, a consortium formed by Mota Engil de México, SAPI de CV, CRRC Hong Kong and CRRC Nanjing Puzhen received a 25.8bn pesos turnkey contract. The contract covered three monorail routes in Monterrey. Separately, the proposed Line 5 was later removed from the monorail plan and replaced with bus rapid transit.

Lines 4 and 6 and trainset supply

Line 4 is planned as a 7.5 km route. It will run west from Hospital de Ginecología & Obstetricia to Pablo G Garza. Meanwhile, Line 6 is designed to extend 9.1 km northeast from the hospital to Apodaca.

CRRC Nanjing Puzhen is providing 13 six-car monorail trainsets for the network. Railway Supply has also covered the CRRC monorail trains for Monterrey lines 4 and 6. Each trainset will be able to carry 720 passengers. Also, the trainsets are being built for GoA4 fully automated operation, with a maximum speed of 80 km/h.
