INDIA: South Western Railway is advancing platform-capacity plans at KSR Bengaluru and Yeshwantpur, with two additional platforms planned at KSR and four proposed at Yeshwantpur Junction.

KSR moves beyond yard remodelling

SWR completed the first phase of yard remodelling at KSR Bengaluru on August 4. The next phase is intended to add two platforms for trains towards Yeshwantpur, along with a Vande Bharat maintenance facility and adjustments to the station’s shunting necks.

The status of the KSR platforms has also been stated officially. The Ministry of Railways said in July 2025 that two new platforms would be built at KSR Bengaluru. A May 2026 Bengaluru infrastructure review said Bengaluru Division was presenting initiatives intended to decongest the city’s railway terminals. No construction start or completion date for the two additional KSR platforms is stated in those releases.

Yeshwantpur proposal remains at Railway Board stage

At Yeshwantpur, SWR has proposed four island platforms: two for mainline trains and two for MEMU services. The plan would require shifting the track machine depot, with the MEMU platforms towards that depot and the mainline platforms on the other side. The capacity proposal has been sent to the Railway Board.

If approved and implemented, the four additional platforms could take Yeshwantpur Junction to 10 platforms. The proposal is not yet equivalent to an approved construction package, and the supplied report gives no implementation date.

Capacity work sits alongside station redevelopment

Yeshwantpur is already undergoing a Rs 367.86-crore redevelopment covering new station buildings, an air concourse, multi-level parking and separate arrival and departure areas.

KSR Bengaluru is also the subject of a separate Rs 1,500-crore redevelopment plan with a new station building, a modern air concourse, a fourth entrance towards Mahatma Gandhi Colony, enhanced passenger amenities and commercial development.

The immediate next steps therefore differ at the two hubs: KSR has completed the first yard-remodelling phase and SWR aims to move into the platform-adding second phase, while Yeshwantpur’s four-platform proposal remains with the Railway Board. The available material does not state a combined completion date or quantify the additional train movements the expanded layouts could accommodate.
