25.03.2026
The hybrid train for the Zagreb–Split line is part of HŽPP’s rolling stock programme. RailwayPro reported the March 16 event at the Končar Electric Vehicles factory.

Croatia’s national passenger rail operator, HŽPP, presented the new multiple units at the event. Among those attending were the following:
- Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković
- Ministry of Transport State Secretary for Railways Žarko Tušek
- the Chairman of the Board of HŽPP
- Končar President Gordan Kolak
- other company representatives
HŽPP and Končar Electric Vehicles production plan
Končar Electric Vehicles is currently building two diesel-electric multiple units under a contract with HŽPP. The contract covers six trains for the Zagreb–Split route, as previously covered by Railway Supply. The project is worth EUR 57.3 million. The Croatian transport ministry says it is being financed through a European Investment Bank loan.
Also, 19 more trains for HŽPP are in production. Meanwhile, the first hybrid unit is due to begin service in July. In addition, the remaining deliveries are scheduled at a rate of one train per month. The six-train programme is due to be completed by the end of the year. At the same time, the factory is producing 20 new low-floor trams for Zagreb.

Minister Butković said: “Over the past few years, 70 new trains have been delivered, so we are continuously acquiring new trains. I am pleased that the purchase of another 36 trains is also planned, for which we must secure funding, thus continuing the modernization and renewal of the fleet,”
Separately, Končar Group specialists are working on the new hybrid multiple units. Also, dozens of Croatian companies are involved. In addition, the technical specifications follow international standards and modern technological trends.
Hybrid train for the Zagreb–Split line delivery and operations
With this rollout, Končar has now produced a fifth traction type at its plant. Meanwhile, four other traction types had already been produced there. They were diesel-electric, diesel, battery-electric, and battery-powered multiple units. The latest addition is an electric-diesel train.
Commenting on the programme, Gordan Kolak said: “Such projects are the best indicator of the strength of the national industry, because behind every train stand Croatian engineers, local development, and a broad ecosystem of suppliers. The successful partnership between Končar and HŽPP is once again confirmed by joint solutions that enhance the quality of travel and bring tangible benefits to passengers,”
Separately, the first electric-diesel train is scheduled for delivery at the end of July 2026. Also, the trains are expected to strengthen links between the two major cities. In addition, they are expected to allow more daily departures. That is expected to improve local and regional mobility. It is also expected to improve overall transport quality for passengers.
Passenger targets and services
The president of HŽPP said the operator also intends to raise the number of services between Zagreb and Split once the trains are introduced. He stated: “These are modern trains with a high level of comfort, and their quality will certainly stimulate an increase in passenger numbers. With the introduction of these trains, we also plan to increase the number of trips between Zagreb and Split, so that, with the new train schedule, we will introduce three daily departures to Split and the same number in the opposite direction,”
Also, he said the route carries about 250,000 passengers each day. Meanwhile, that figure is expected to grow considerably. Still, the operator wants 500,000 passengers on this route as soon as possible. In addition, another five trains have also been ordered beyond the six trains already covered. Those units are set for delivery in 2027. They are to provide links between Osijek, Rijeka, and Pula via Slovenia.
Technical specifications of the electric-diesel trains
Route and traction profile
The line between Zagreb and Split extends for 429 km. The section from Zagreb to Oštarije measures 103 km. It is electrified. Meanwhile, the stretch from Oštarije to Split measures 326 km. That part is not electrified. Also, the trains will operate using both electric and diesel traction during the trip. In addition, they will be fitted with powerful engines for the mountainous route. Their top speed will be 160 km/h. They will also be able to run coupled together to expand carrying capacity.
Onboard features
A stronger rail connection between Zagreb and Split has the potential to draw more passengers. Also, the purchase of these trains will help improve transport system energy efficiency. It will also help cut noise and greenhouse gas emissions. The programme forms part of the ongoing renewal of HŽ Putnički prijevoz rolling stock. Its aim is more efficient, more competitive, and more sustainable passenger rail transport in Croatia.
Meanwhile, the trains will be low-floor units. They will have four doors on each side. In addition, they will include wheelchair ramps, bicycle storage areas, and restrooms. One restroom is designed for passengers with reduced mobility.
Separately, the full passenger compartment will be under video surveillance. Also, passengers will have access to the following:
- multimedia screens
- audio and visual station announcements
- free Wi-Fi
- modern passenger information systems
- power outlets
- vending machines for food and drinks
Each train will offer 150 seats in total. That includes 18 in first class and 132 in second class.
