Finland’s national rail operator, VR, has confirmed that Stadler is the preferred bidder to supply 20 new electric trains for the Helsinki suburban network. It is planned to replace 34 Sm2 trains that were built between 1975 and 1981. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to IRJ.

VR Group launched a tender for the purchase of new electric trains in 2019, and on October 24, Stadler was selected with an formal award of a contract worth 250 million euros, subject to a 14-day appeal period.

The contract will include the supply of spare parts, tools, training and documentation, as well as the option to purchase up to 50 additional electric trains and maintenance services.

VR Group wants to have the new trains into commercial service in 2024 and plans to replace all of its Sm2 EMUs in 2026.

Stadler had previously won a contract to supply VR 60 diesel-electric locomotives with an option for up to 100 additional locomotives, as well as maintenance.
