The two organizations will work on an initiative called the Next Generation CBTC Green Project, which is expected to help SMRT Trains reach zero emissions by 2050. It is reported by Railway Supply magazine with reference to Railway Technology.

The project is mainly aimed at reducing electricity consumption, as well as further improving the energy efficiency of traction on NSEWL lines. In 2017, Thales’ SelTrac Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system was deployed for the first time on NSEWL.

Given that the NSEWL is controlled by the CBTC signalling, the traction-related actions of acceleration, braking and coasting are controlled by the automatic train operation (ATO) system. As a sustainable alternative, Singapore’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) systems run on clean traction energy.

The Thales Automatic Train Control (ATC) system combines intelligent and environmentally friendly CBTC algorithms. These algorithms help drive an automated driverless train that follows optimized curves to reduce energy consumption and increase punctuality.

Both organizations will now focus on further developing next-generation Green CBTC algorithms to evaluate the operational performance of their green functions using data analytics. The partnership will also explore the potential of using a new smart application to reduce the traction energy of NSEWL lines by 15%.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Thales to provide energy-optimized trains. With the cost of electricity rising, any reduction in energy consumption across our operations will help improve productivity and financial sustainability.”

In July of this year, Thales won a long-term service contract with SMRT Trains.
