Poland has developed a new system for the transportation of turnouts

KZN Bieanów from Krakow has created a Switcher system for transporting assembled turnouts. The technology was developed with government support – with funding from the National Research and Development Center, commissioned by the infrastructure operator PKP PLK. This is reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply with reference to Raport Kolejowy.

The first two models of block transport cars were manufactured in 2015. These were the Switcher Tilt with a long folding transport platform and the Switcher Plus equipped with two hydraulic unloading cranes. According to the developers, Switcher can safely unload the switch unit to the desired location in about 20 minutes, and the entire switch in an hour.

Later KZN Bieanów created its own fleet of ten wagons. The company estimates the total cost of the project to be around PLN 20 million (EUR 4.3 million).

In 2020, the company received an order for such a specialized rolling stock from abroad, from one of the leading European companies.  Currently, another version of the Switcher Flat is being developed with new equipment that will allow working on single track sections and expand the number of operations.

All wagon models are built on the basis of the 27.5-meter Switcher platform.
