WH Davis invested £70,000 in two digital automated brake testing facilities for wagons, which the company claims are the first in the UK freight sector. The device is connected to the wagon and automatically performs a series of brake checks, eliminating the risk of human error. The results are recorded in a database or on paper. One unit will be used for new wagons, while the other is installed at the Ferrybridge Davis Wagon Services maintenance facility.

OmniTRAX worked with the Short Line Safety Institute to conduct a two-day hazardous materials training on the Panhandle Northern Railroad, combining classroom training with an emergency situation simulation using the SLSI Safety Train. The training included preparedness, response plans, coordination of first responders, community involvement, reporting, agency notifications, and incident command structures.

The US Short Line Safety Institute appointed Ryan Risdon to a new position as Director of the Hazardous Materials Training and Safety Culture Support Program. “He brings significant and diverse railroad management experience from both an employee and contractor perspective. Additionally, his over 15 years of volunteer firefighting/emergency services work will provide significant insight into how we can best meet the training needs of emergency response personnel who may be called to a railroad incident,” said Executive Director Tom Murta.

The intermodal sector’s needs during global instability were the main topic at the Hupac Group’s annual intermodal forum in Lugano on May 26. CEO Michael Schälchli stated that a “toxic cocktail” is being created by an “unprecedented amount of negative external factors,” including high energy costs, Russia’s war against Ukraine, rail bottlenecks, and construction work, especially in Germany. There is also strong competitive pressure from road transport.

Starting from June 1, Union Pacific expanded its services at the Barbours Cut container terminal in the Port of Houston to allow for direct loading of containers onto trains for transportation to Denver, Salt Lake City, Oakland, Los Angeles, and El Paso.
