Metrans failed to find ETCS supplier for 27 locomotives

The Metrans Group cannot find a supplier of the ETCS for the 27 Bombardier Traxx locomotives. The company has now canceled the second tender, under which a contract worth 256 million kroons was awarded, as railway magazine Railway Supply informs citing Zdopravy. news portal.

The company itself does not want to comment on the situation and further steps. “We will not comment on this because of the ongoing proceedings and possible appeals. It is not closed yet, ”said Martin Horzinek, member of the Board of Directors of Metrans. However, according to a written report from the procuring entity, the tender ended as there was only one bidder. It was Bombardier Transportation, which was priced at 10.329 million euros (approximately 273 million kroons).

“After the resignation of the only tenderer, about which the customer was notified on November 11, 2020, there was no other applicant in the tender procedure,” the report says.

According to August data from the Czech Association of Freight Rail Carriers, Czech freight rail carriers must equip at least 586 locomotives with mobile ETCS interlocking parts to operate on the main corridors for four years. While 78 of them have been equipped, the assembly of another 195 locomotives has been ordered.

At the same time, freight carriers were the first in the Czech Republic to use ETCS. In February, it was Metrans Rail (a subsidiary of Metrans) that launched the very first regular train under ETCS Level 2. Other companies such as ČD Cargo or Unipetrol Doprava are preparing for trial operation. Exclusive ETCS operation will become mandatory on major corridors from 1 January 2025.
