Luxury trains: Belmond Andean Explorer in Peru
In a world where speed is valued, where the traveler is constantly looking for a faster way to get from point A to point B, there is something different – luxury trains, the purpose of which is the journey itself and unforgettable emotions of it.
In the spring of 2017, the Belmond Andean Explorer Express was launched in South America, traveling between Cuzco – the ancient capital of the Inca Empire – and the city of Arequipa, a historic center that is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Every Thursday the express departs from Cusco southeast towards Puno, after lunch it stops in Rakchi for an excursion to the Inca archaeological site, crosses the picturesque mountain meadows of the Andes. Travelers meet the spectacular sunrise on Friday at Lake Titicaca and after breakfast they will have an unforgettable boat trip to the unique islands of this lake. On Saturday, after breakfast, the train stops again for a morning excursion to the enchanting landscapes of Lake Lagunillas and the Sumbau caves, and in the afternoon the journey ends in Arequipa. If you wish, you can get off the train in Canyahuasi and visit the Colca Canyon.
The journey lasts three days and two nights. If you wish, you can go in the opposite direction. From Arequipe to Cusco, the express departs on Saturday evenings. Every Tuesday, the Belmond Andean Explorer Express departs a short overnight route from Cusco to Puno, taking passengers to Lake Titicaca, and returns on Wednesday.
The Belmond Andean Explorer Express travels on a unique route with interesting historical sites and breathtaking and varied landscapes that provide many unforgettable emotions, but that’s not all. The express itself is not an ordinary train, but a real hotel on wheels with a high level of service, creating an extraordinary atmosphere while traveling.
According to The Telegraph, the refurbishment of the train cost the owner $ 10 million. There are 24 compartments in total. Fifty people are engaged in passenger service.
The Belmond Andean Explorer is a luxury train that carries up to 48 passengers. The carriages for travelers are offered 4 types of rooms – single, double with 2 beds, double “deluxe” and “junior suite” with a double bed, a wardrobe, a cozy hospitable corner with two armchairs and a table. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, separate toilet and shower.
The interior design was created by the distinguished Inge Moore and her studio Muza Lab, London. Natural soft ivory color fills the interiors with air, gives them lightness and romantic mood. The feeling of luxury is created by a multitude of exquisite decorative elements and a variety of accessories that are not striking, but fascinate with graceful lines and unsurpassed details. A bright accent is created by natural woven alpaca wool textiles, which bring ethnic Peruvian motives to the interior. One of the recurring design elements of the Belmond Andean Express, the Chaka, is a stepped cross that has been widespread in South America since ancient times. It is depicted on the walls of carriages, on staff uniforms, on napkins and glasses, and even on robes and towels provided to guests.
Belmond Andean Express has two dining cars – Llama and Munier. Bright and elegant, they are the perfect setting for a gastronomic discovery. The menu is designed by the creative chef and ambassador of Peruvian cuisine, Diego Muñoz. His special take on regional classics is based on fresh and unusual dishes from seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in the Peruvian Andes.
If you are in the mood for communication – you are hospitably invited by the Piano Bar Car. This is a saloon car with panoramic windows, a bar and a grand piano. Here you can enjoy the fantastic beauty of the Peruvian landscape, live music and singing, and share your day’s adventures with friends with a refreshing cocktail in hand.
As you wander through the Andes, you can relax and revive after an exciting day at the luxurious Picaflor Spa (hummingbird). Or visit the library for a selection of literature that will help you immerse yourself in the fascinating history, culture and natural wonders of Peru. Next to the library there is a boutique where you can buy original gifts and handicrafts as a souvenir of an unforgettable trip.
Another highlight of the train is the observation car. There are sofas here – you can relax and drink cocktails in the fresh air, getting real pleasure from the surrounding beauty.
The Belmond Andean Explorer Express is a crossing point where time seems to slow down between departure and arrival. It is a place where one can think and dream, a space where the beauty of the earth can fill the soul. It is an incredible, astounding journey and a one-of-a-kind immersion in the culture, landscape and crafts of Peru. Here passengers have a new, modern way of enjoying the beauty of slow travel and creation of vivid recollections they will always remember.
