Freight locomotives Prima T8

At the end of June 2018, Alstom presented its first Prima T8 AZ8A electric freight locomotive for the Azerbaijan Railways company. The event took place at the Electric Locomotive Arastyru Zauyty plant, which is located in the Astana Special Economic Zone, Kazakhstan. The joint venture, half of which is owned by Alstom, has already made 40 locomotives for use on Kazakh railways.

Freight locomotives

The advanced technologies used in the creation of Prima locomotives allow them to meet the highest requirements for functionality and safety. The reliability and availability of the AZ8A have been verified in the operation of the existing Prima KZ8A.

Azerbaijan Railways have chosen the Prima T8 AZ8A locomotive for heavy freight traffic.

In 2014, Azerbaijan Railways decided to purchase 40 two-section freight locomotives operating at 25 kV AC. AZ8A is a Prima T8 heavy freight locomotive developed on the basis of the technical requirements of the Azerbaijan Railways company and in accordance with the requirements of GOST and TU standards.

The locomotive is equipped with a high-tech traction system based on Alstom technology. Prima AZ8A is designed to operate in temperatures from -25 °C to + 50 °C. Due to its modular design, it requires minimal maintenance and is highly reliable. The specific design of the AZ8A locomotive can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h with long maintenance intervals, reduce energy consumption, and also reduce locomotive maintenance costs and improve fleet management efficiency.

Main advantages

Increased Reliability and Availability – Longer maintenance intervals provide Azerbaijan Railways with better accessibility while guaranteeing reliability.

Continuous Improvement – The AZ8A locomotives are part of the Prima line and draw on the experience of over 3,000 locomotives sold worldwide.

Competitive advantages

High tractive powerthe AZ8A has 8 axles and is one of the most powerful electric locomotives in the world, capable of transporting loads of up to 9000 tons and a speed of up to 120 km/h. With an installed engine power of 8.8 MW (continuous operation), it is guaranteed reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs.

Modular design – being part of the Alstom Prima range of locomotives, AZ8A locomotives use joint development and only state-of-the-art technology. And the modular design optimizes life cycle service and spare parts use.

Ergonomics and comfort – the locomotives are designed for long-distance freight transport. Comfort for drivers along the entire route is ensured by a spacious cabin equipped with a climate control system, cooking and freezing food, arrangement of storage areas, and a toilet. The cab is designed in compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations and provides maximum comfort.

Today Alstom is the only manufacturer of electric locomotives in the entire territory of Central Asia and the Caucasus region and the largest participant in the revival of the railway industry in the region and the development of its economy.
