Denmark will not complete the full deployment of ETCS until 2033

Banedanmark, the Danish railway infrastructure operator, has announced a revised timeline for the completion of the European Train Control System (ETCS) implementation in the eastern part of the country, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The new schedule, agreed upon with Alstom, shifts the system launch on the Roskilde-Copenhagen line from 2028 to 2033.
Initially, the plan was to complete the deployment of ETCS Level 2 throughout Denmark by 2021.
The deadlines for ETCS implementation have been repeatedly postponed due to various factors, including insufficient project development.
The decision to deploy ETCS across Denmark’s 2,100 km railway network was made in 2006 based on a conducted study.
The joint venture of Thales and Strukton is responsible for equipping the western part of the network, while Alstom is responsible for the eastern part.
Alstom is also installing onboard ETCS devices on the rolling stock used on the network.
In the western part of Denmark, where train traffic is less intense, the ETCS system is being implemented more rapidly.
However, the eastern part of the network faces greater challenges, requiring additional time.
The postponement is also due to the need for detailed development and thorough project preparation to ensure the system’s safety and efficiency.
