Delhi Metro expansion is set to move forward as the Prime Minister’s Office said Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will inaugurate two new corridors. He will also lay the foundation stone for three additional routes under Phase 5-A. Together, these metro projects are valued at about Rs. 18,300 crore. They are intended to improve connectivity across Delhi.

The Delhi Metro network is set to grow further with the opening of the Majlis Park–Maujpur Babarpur corridor on the Pink Line and the Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park corridor on the Magenta Line. Also, the projects are aimed at making travel across the capital easier. They are expected to cut journey times and improve daily commuting for residents. With Delhi continuing to face population growth and traffic congestion, metro expansion remains part of broader efforts to support mobility and sustainable urban development.

Delhi Metro expansion with two new corridors

Two new corridors will be added to the network. Both will serve North and North-East Delhi.

The Majlis Park–Maujpur Babarpur corridor is part of the Pink Line corridor. It is approximately 12.3 km long. It is expected to improve access for several densely populated areas. For example, these include Burari, Jagatpur-Wazirabad, Khajuri Khas, Bhajanpura, and Yamuna Vihar. The new link is expected to shorten travel times. It is also expected to offer thousands of daily commuters a reliable alternative to road transport.

The Deepali Chowk–Majlis Park corridor is part of the Magenta Line corridor. It extends around 9.9 km. It will connect key residential and commercial locations such as Madhuban Chowk, Haiderpur Badli Mor, Bhalaswa, and Majlis Park. In addition, this link is expected to make metro connectivity between North and West Delhi more seamless. It is also expected to allow faster movement across different parts of the city.

Phase 5-A expansion and new routes

In addition to inaugurating the two completed corridors, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for three new sections under the Phase 5-A expansion. Combined, these planned routes will cover about 16.10 km.

The three proposed corridors, as The Indian Express reported, are R.K. Ashram Marg–Indraprastha, Aerocity–Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1, and Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj. Meanwhile, these routes are intended to strengthen links between important parts of the capital. These include residential areas, commercial hubs, and the airport.

Benefits for commuters across Delhi

For daily commuters, the Delhi Metro expansion is expected to bring several benefits. These include:

  • shorter travel times on major routes
  • stronger links between North, South, and East Delhi
  • direct airport access for travellers
  • reduced congestion on key roads
  • an environment-friendly transport option

At the same time, the broader plan is also expected to improve integration between metro services and other public transport systems. This is intended to help make everyday travel more efficient.

Over the years, Delhi Metro has become the backbone of the city’s public transport network. Separately, as the system continues to grow, more neighbourhoods are being brought into the network. This gives commuters wider access to fast, safe, and reliable travel options.

The Phase 5-A projects are expected to extend the system further. They are also expected to close existing connectivity gaps and support Delhi’s long-term infrastructure plans. Still, the opening of the new corridors and the launch of the Phase 5-A routes mark another point in the continuing expansion of the Delhi Metro network. By improving access to key destinations and reducing travel time, these projects are expected to benefit commuters across the capital. They are also expected to strengthen the city’s urban transport system.
