USA: Cocoa’s planned Brightline station has secured a $56.48 million federal rail grant, clearing its largest funding hurdle and moving the Space Coast stop closer to construction.

U.S. Rep. Mike Haridopolos announced the award on August 11. The grant represents the largest single funding component identified for the more than $80 million station planned near Clearlake Road and U.S. 1, where Brightline has long owned land at the “Cocoa curve.”

Cocoa and the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization had previously pursued the same federal funding without success. The new award changes the project’s funding position, but it does not mean station construction has started.

$56.48M Grant Becomes the Project’s Main Funding Piece

The federal award sits alongside $15.5 million from the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization, $5 million from the City of Cocoa and $5 million from the Brevard County Tourism Development Council. A separate $2 million federal appropriation approved in January 2026 was also designated to support a future Cocoa passenger rail station.

The City of Cocoa also received a separate $2 million Florida appropriation in July for construction of an access road serving the future multimodal station. That road funding supports associated infrastructure and should not be treated as evidence that the station itself is already under construction.

FRA Program Can Support Design and Capital Rail Work

Before the August award, Cocoa and the Space Coast TPO were pursuing the station through the Federal Railroad Administration’s National Railroad Partnership Program. FRA says the program can fund capital projects that expand or establish intercity passenger rail service, as well as planning, environmental review and final design.

The supplied grant announcement does not specify how Cocoa’s award will be divided among those eligible activities. That distinction matters because the project still has steps between a funding award and physical station construction.

Construction Start and Opening Date Remain Unannounced

No construction start or opening date is stated in the supplied announcement. The Space Coast TPO continues to describe Cocoa as a planned intermodal station on Brightline’s Orlando–Miami corridor, while the City of Cocoa identifies the station access road as infrastructure for a future passenger rail station.

When completed, the Cocoa stop is intended to connect the Space Coast directly to Brightline’s existing Orlando-to-Miami route. For now, the verified state change is financial: the $56.48 million grant has moved the station materially closer to construction, but not yet into construction or passenger service.
