The broader plan is to develop metro stations as multifunctional urban spaces. These spaces combine transport use with commercial and property development opportunities. In that sense, Chennai Metro Phase-2 is aligning station infrastructure with wider urban development goals.
Elevated metro stations and integrated property development
The consultancy applies to three elevated metro stations on Corridor-5 of Phase-2. These are Shastri Nagar Metro Station, Velmurugan Nagar Metro Station and Thirumangalam Metro Station, as shown in the CMRL Phase-II route map. Meanwhile, these stations are expected to witness increased passenger footfall once the phase becomes operational.
By linking integrated property development with station infrastructure, CMRL aims to improve passenger experience. In addition, it aims to create revenue-generating assets for the metro system. The approach reflects the metro authority’s wider interest in transit-oriented development around key stations.
Under the contract, RDX Architects will prepare detailed architectural and engineering designs for the proposed developments. For example, the scope includes:
- detailed architectural planning of station entry and exit structures;
- engineering and structural design of integrated property development spaces;
- planning for functional integration between transit infrastructure and commercial facilities;
- ensuring efficient passenger movement and accessibility within station premises;
- designing modern infrastructure aligned with urban development standards.
Contract value, timeline and agreement details
The CMRL design consultancy contract has been awarded at a total value of Rs. 1,73,77,034. Separately, the assignment is scheduled for completion within 150 days. During that period, the consultant will prepare and submit the complete set of design documents required for the development. This timeline reflects CMRL’s effort to accelerate planning and implementation activities for the Phase-2 corridor.
The agreement was signed by Shri T. Archunan, IRSE, Director (Projects), CMRL, and Shri K. Nachiappan, Chief Executive Officer of RDX Architects. At the same time, senior CMRL officials present at the ceremony included:
- Shri T. Livingstone Eliazer, Chief General Manager;
- Smt. Rekha Prakash, Chief General Manager;
- Dr. D. Jebaselwin Gladson, Chief General Manager.
Representatives of RDX Architects were also present.
The project forms part of CMRL’s strategy to implement transit-oriented development around metro infrastructure. Still, the stated aims remain specific:
- improve station accessibility and passenger convenience;
- generate non-fare revenue;
- promote sustainable urban development;
- create vibrant public spaces around metro stations.
Such developments are increasingly becoming a key component of modern metro systems worldwide.
The consultancy agreement with RDX Architects forms part of Chennai Metro’s Phase-2 expansion. By integrating property development with station infrastructure, CMRL aims to enhance passenger facilities, create sustainable urban spaces and boost non-fare revenue, ultimately strengthening the long-term viability and functionality of Chennai’s growing metro network.
