29.10.2025
California is investing nearly $5 billion to modernize its transportation system, enhance safety, and reduce harmful emissions.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

California Allocates $4.9 Billion to Upgrade Infrastructure
The California Transportation Commission has approved $4.9 billion in funding. Of this amount, $470 million will be provided under the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 (SB 1), which ensures a steady revenue stream through fuel taxes and registration fees. The remaining $4.2 billion will come from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), enacted in 2021.

Over the next five years, California expects to receive about $42 billion in total federal funding. These investments will support the repair of highways and rail lines, the reconstruction of bridges, the modernization of public transit, the improvement of airports and seaports, and the expansion of electric-vehicle charging infrastructure.
More than half of the approved funds will go to 600 local and regional agencies. They will manage road resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation, and transportation-hub upgrades. For example, $700 million has been allocated for the full renovation of the Vincent Thomas Bridge in the Port of Los Angeles, while $140 million will fund new truck access roads to ease congestion and improve logistics.
California Modernizes Rail Infrastructure and Improves Connectivity
Rail projects are also part of the state’s investment plan. In Marin County, $2.7 million will go toward the renovation of a rail bridge, while in San Francisco $78 million is designated for the rehabilitation of several bridge structures. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will receive an additional $30 million to introduce a modern radio-based train control system (CBTC), which will enhance operational reliability and safety.
In Santa Clara County, $6.9 million will fund the construction of a 790-meter rail section near the Santa Clara – Great America Station. This project will improve access to nearby stadium and amusement park facilities, helping to manage increased passenger flows during major events.
Through these coordinated efforts, California continues to implement a long-term strategy for transportation modernization, combining technological progress with environmental responsibility and a focus on community convenience.
