Copenhagen restores tram service and upgrades its network

After a half-century pause, Copenhagen introduced high-speed Siemens Avenio trams that now carry passengers on the first section of the new line. City officials expect the project to strengthen suburban connections and ease pressure on local roads.

The full route of 29 kilometers of track will be opened by summer 2026. After that, the headway in peak hours will decrease from ten to five minutes. The last tram ran in the Danish capital back in 1972. At that time, rail transport services were replaced by buses and the metro.

The four-fold bidirectional tram has accommodation for 258 persons, of which 64 are seated. Collision protection and an updated driver’s cab with digital screens were incorporated by Siemens. The six 100 kW motors offer a speed of 70 km/h, and noise levels remain exceptionally low. All these ensure a smooth passage of the tram within the residential area.

Copenhagen and Siemens promote sustainable urban mobility

The turn-key contract award went to Siemens Mobility in 2018. The contract includes the supply of 29 trams, route electrification works, signaling solutions, as well as the establishment of depots. In addition to these services, the company will also be providing maintenance for 15 years.

The launch of the transport service helps to implement the long-term climate strategy of the city of Copenhagen to reduce CO₂ emissions and develop eco-friendly transport. The return of trams represents an indication of a fresh start towards a greener future.
