California High-Speed Rail southern railhead facility now complete
05.02.2026
California High-Speed Rail southern railhead facility is now complete, and the California High-Speed Rail Authority says the hub is meant to support the transition into the Central Valley segment track-laying phase, as reported by Progressive Railroading.

In Kern County near Wasco, the roughly 150-acre site is set up as a railhead logistics hub for receiving, storing and distributing the materials and equipment needed to electrify the Central Valley segment. The update came via a press release from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office, with related project progress also noted by Railway Supply.
California High-Speed Rail southern railhead facility tied to the freight-rail network
To connect the facility to the wider rail system, CHSRA built about 10 miles of temporary siding and storage track in partnership with BNSF Railway. As the CHSRA “Southern Railhead Project” fact sheet explains, those tracks link directly into the national freight-rail network, helping streamline equipment delivery.

The railhead itself includes a rail storage yard, warehouse space, maintenance and operations areas, and a control office. Together, these elements are meant to keep construction materials and equipment moving as work continues.
Central Valley segment track-laying phase and project footprint
The southern railhead sits at the southernmost end of the 119-mile Central Valley segment under civil construction in preparation for track laying. That segment runs through Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and Kern counties.
Track and overhead contact system construction timeline
Newsom joined local leaders and construction crews on Feb. 3 for a press conference this week to announce the site’s completion, following a groundbreaking on Jan. 6, 2025.
Since that groundbreaking, CHSRA has secured suppliers for long-welded rail and issued a request for proposals for track and overhead contact system construction on the Central Valley segment, with the authority expecting to award that contract in 2026. It has also issued invitations for bids covering ballast, overhead contact system poles and concrete ties.
