The Cairo Monorail inauguration on March 20, 2026, saw President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi lead Egypt into a new era of transit. Meanwhile, the President was joined by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and Transport Minister Kamel el Wazir for the ceremony.

They took a ceremonial ride from Al-Fattah Al-Aleem Mosque station to the Financial and Business District station. At the same time, this 56.5-kilometer route now links Nasr City to the New Administrative Capital. The total travel time for a full trip is roughly 70 minutes.

Logistics of the Cairo Monorail inauguration

The system runs on elevated tracks built into road medians. Also, this design was chosen specifically to keep traffic moving below. Alstom supplied 40 Innovia 300 trains for this specific line. Additionally, these units use Cityflo CBTC technology for fully automated, driverless operation. These four-car sets reach 80 km/h. Meanwhile, they can maintain a 90-second headway during peak periods.

Project Financing and Technical Details

As noted in previous coverage by railway.supply, the project is rooted in a 2019 construction contract. This initial agreement was valued at approximately €2.7 billion. Total costs reach €4.1 billion when including long-term operation and maintenance. Separately, the turnkey delivery was managed by a consortium. This group includes Alstom, Orascom Construction, and Arab Contractors.

Expanding transit to 6th of October City

The broader plan includes 35 stations across two lines. Also, the eastern branch is now operational. Work continues on the 43.8-kilometer Western Monorail Line. This section will link Giza to 6th of October City. In addition, the route starts from Metro Line 3 at Gameat El Dewal station. Once complete, the combined network will utilize 70 Alstom trains.

The project created 15,000 direct jobs. At the same time, it added 10,000 indirect roles for the local workforce. Also, the electric-powered system provides a low-emission alternative to traditional vehicles. This change helps lower fuel use and congestion. Additionally, the network integrates with Metro Line 3 to create a cohesive transit map for the expanding metropolis.
