Amtrak Seattle maintenance facility reaches key build stage
17.03.2026
Amtrak Seattle maintenance facility has reached a new construction stage. The final steel beam was placed at King Street Yard, according to Amtrak. Also, the company said the milestone reflects strong collaboration with the project contractor. Still, the new Maintenance & Inspection Facility continues to take shape.

Amtrak Seattle maintenance facility and King Street Yard progress
The new M&I facility is intended to support Amtrak’s New Era of Rail. It will provide maintenance capacity for the new Airo fleet that will debut on Amtrak Cascades later this year, as Amtrak’s Airo fleet page notes. Meanwhile, the structural frame is now complete. At the same time, the project has moved closer to a modern, efficient facility. It is intended to strengthen Amtrak’s operations across the Pacific Northwest.
Construction progress so far includes:
- about 1.8 million pounds of pre-engineered metal building steel installed for the M&I superstructure;
- more than 12,500 cubic yards of concrete placed across the M&I Facility and the adjacent parking deck;
- total labor on the project has exceeded 200,000 worker hours since work began.

Next construction phases through 2026
Construction will continue through 2026. In addition, the next phases cover architectural work, systems installation, and interior buildout. They will prepare the site for advanced rail maintenance operations.
Broader maintenance network for new trainsets
Separately, Amtrak is building a network of new and upgraded maintenance facilities across the country, as previously covered by Railway Supply. The network is intended to support today’s fleet and the next generation of trainsets. For example, the company said these facilities allow full trainsets to be inspected and serviced together. Meanwhile, that approach is intended to reduce downtime and improve efficiency.
