Amtrak Cascades Airo trains reach final testing
18.05.2026
Amtrak Cascades Airo trains are moving closer to passenger service. The first new trainset is now in Seattle for the next stage of work in the Pacific Northwest. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

As Amtrak notes, the trainset is part of a new generation of equipment. It is designed to improve regional rail travel through regionally inspired design, modern passenger amenities, enhanced accessibility features, and local food and beverage options. Before it can carry passengers, this trainset must complete testing, staff training, and route preparation.
Three testing stages before service
The first stage took place on a dedicated test track in Pueblo, Colorado. Teams checked the train’s core systems there. They confirmed that the systems operated as intended.
Then, testing moved to the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak owns and manages the railroad there. That setting allowed teams to test the train safely on active tracks.

That sequence now continues in the Pacific Northwest. The trainset is in its final stage before passenger service. This phase includes final testing, staff training, route testing, and practice runs on the Amtrak Cascades route.
The new trains enter service in the Pacific Northwest later this year.
Amtrak Cascades Airo trains and fleet modernization
The new Airo trains are designed around comfort, reliability, and accessibility. They are also part of Amtrak’s largest fleet modernization effort ever. The arrival of the first trainset in the area where it will operate brings that rollout into clearer view.
As Railway Supply reported, this is the first of eight planned trainsets for Amtrak Cascades. Nationwide, the Airo rollout will deliver 83 trainsets across the country. Together, they represent progress, new trains, American manufacturing, and an updated passenger experience taking shape.
With the first trainset now in Seattle, passengers in the Pacific Northwest are closer to seeing the next generation of Amtrak Cascades service in operation.
