A contract covers Alstom Skyway APM replacement at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. According to Airport Industry News, the contract covers replacement of the current Skyway APM. Also, it is valued at about 380 million EUR (437 million USD). In addition, it includes 15 years of operations and maintenance services.

What the Alstom Skyway APM replacement includes?

Meanwhile, the contract includes a new Operations Control Center. At the same time, it includes automatic train control upgrades. Separately, it includes communications system upgrades. Still, it covers 16 Innovia APM R vehicles. Also, it covers the modernisation of station doors across all airport terminals.

For example, Alstom will build the new control center. In addition, it will upgrade to Urbalis automatic train control. Meanwhile, it will install enhanced communication systems for improved reliability. At the same time, it will deploy the 16 new vehicles. Separately, it will replace station doors throughout the terminals. Still, it will provide operations and maintenance support over the 15-year term.

Why IAH is upgrading the Skyway system?

George Bush Intercontinental Airport is in the middle of a multi-billion-dollar expansion. As Alstom notes, the airport’s expansion is aimed at accommodating passenger growth. At the same time, the airport expects the Skyway renewal to reduce service disruptions. In addition, it is expected to improve passenger flow between terminals. Also, it is expected to enhance the overall travel experience. Meanwhile, upgraded digital communications and monitoring systems are planned to increase operational reliability.

For the last two decades, Alstom has operated the Skyway APM at the airport. It has also maintained the Skyway APM, utilising original Innovia APM 100 vehicles.
