Bankstown transport hub opens with plaza, station access
25.03.2026
Bankstown transport hub opened to the public last weekend, as Sydney Metro announced. It brings a redeveloped plaza and transit interchange to Bankstown Station. The work forms part of Sydney’s Southwest Metro project.

Bankstown transport hub and new interchange
The new precinct was built as part of Sydney’s Southwest Metro project. It is designed to support “seamless and accessible interchanges” between buses and trains. Also, it adds three kiss-and-ride parking spaces. Meanwhile, metro operations are due to begin later this year. It is then expected to handle thousands of passengers each hour during the morning peak.

In addition, the upgrade includes a second Sydney Trains entrance building. It provides direct access from the plaza to the T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line. At the same time, the entry has modern ticket gates. These include nine new opal gates. It also has 18 secure bicycle parking spaces.
Bankstown Station plaza links both sides of the centre
Separately, the NSW Government says the 90-metre, tree-lined plaza now provides a direct pedestrian route. The Bankstown Station plaza links the northern and southern sides of Bankstown. It also links the town centre with nearby residential areas. At the same time, it is hoped it will boost foot traffic for local businesses.
For example, the space has been prepared for future dining and retail uses. It includes new lighting and shaded seating. It also has concrete benches and timber decking beneath the 150-year-old fig tree. The opening was marked on Sunday March 22. It featured live drumming, information stalls and activities for children.
Southwest Metro project works continue at the station
The new metro station is at the southern end of the precinct. It is in the final phase of construction. Meanwhile, the Bankstown Station page notes an opening in the second half of 2026. That is when Southwest Metro services commence.
Separately, construction of the new precinct and station entrance buildings took more than 1.5 years. It involved 1942 workers on site.
In addition, the work required platform removal. More than 50 metres of the former Sydney Trains platform were removed. It also required major track realignment. That allowed access to both platforms from the new entrance.
It is the largest station precinct upgrade since the station opened in 1909.
