32,000 SJSU Students Get Free Bay Area Transit

USA: Starting this week, San José State students no longer have to choose which Bay Area transit agency they can afford to ride — a new Clipper BayPass gives an estimated 32,000 eligible students free, unlimited access to 24 operators at once, including BART and Caltrain.
The Clipper BayPass became available to all full- and part-time SJSU students on Aug. 15, 2026, funded through the university’s IRA student fee after being approved on May 5, 2026, according to SJSU Associated Students. The pass covers BART, Caltrain, VTA, AC Transit and other Clipper-accepting services across the nine-county Bay Area for trips to campus, work, internships or anywhere else.

Replacing a $99 pass that covered one line
Before BayPass, SJSU’s Transportation Solutions office sold a $99-a-year Caltrain GoPass that only worked on Caltrain — a narrower option that left out students who needed to combine Muni, AC Transit or VTA to reach campus from across the region. BayPass replaces that with a single free card covering the full regional network at, as the university puts it, half the previous cost to students who commuted on multiple systems. Riders tap their Clipper card the same way they always have; some services, including BART and Caltrain, still require a tap-off at the end of the trip.
The rollout is part of a Metropolitan Transportation Commission pilot that has already run at UC Berkeley, San Francisco State and Santa Rosa Junior College, and MTC officials say roughly 50,000 Bay Area residents are now enrolled across the program, according to VTA. The announcement does not specify whether SJSU’s version of the pass is permanent or tied to the pilot’s funding, which the university has said will continue at least through mid-2026.
